I am having issues installing the desktop server, presumably because C: is not my primary drive, D: is. is there any way around this issue aside from reassigning drives? Unfortunately that is not an option...

You should be able to install it on D or any other drive. Just when you are installing select different path: for example D:\HomeDJ
